Understanding The Importance Of Your State Inspection And Emissions Test

by Vicky Mills

State vehicle inspections are something that you have to go through whether you want to or not. Many people view these inspections as an annoyance or an inconvenience. After all, what purpose do they really serve? But state inspections are actually far more important than you may realize. Here are the reasons why.

The Purpose of the State Inspection

Many feel that they should not have to go through routine maintenance or the occasional inspection and still have to pay for a state inspection. They feel that this serves no other purpose but to obtain a sticker so they can legally drive without hassle from law enforcement.

The state inspection isn't just a check to see if the finer aspects of your car are in order. Inspections are about responsibility and public safety. To understand, you have to look at the two aspects of most vehicle inspections. Those are the emission test and the safety test.

A Case for Emissions Testing

Do you understand why emissions test are necessary in some areas? Many people are so accustomed to getting them annually or bi-annually that they've become routine. That routine has served to cause many people to forget, and some younger drivers to never know, why the emissions testing exists to begin with.

In 1990, the government launched additional initiatives aimed at doing what it could to cut back on air pollution. The Clean Air Act included, among many other things, provisions for cleaner burning gas and fewer emissions from vehicles. This was important because more and more people were taking to the road, which contributed to increased emissions.

If you never knew, the stuff that comes out of a cars exhaust pipe doesn't only consist of air pollutants; it consists of toxic compounds that can actually cause serious illness and even death. At the very least, these toxins can cause or exacerbate health problems. The less of that kind of thing the better.

The more cars that go in for emissions testing, the easier it is to find and weed out the ones that need repair. This removes cars from the collective pool that are putting out far more of these toxins than it should. It's a cumulative effort, so every car counts.

A Case for Safety Testing

Safety testing is far easier to explain since what it's about is right there in the name. The safety inspection makes sure that your vehicle has at least the minimum safety requirements.

The inspection checks for things that every car should have, not just yours. This increases public safety. The sticker lets everybody know that you have at least these things in working order.

  • Working brakes
  • A working horn
  • All lights are operable
  • Your airbags are still viable

Your state deems these to be the things that every single vehicle on the road must have. Besides, sometimes your safety inspection can lead to you discovering an issue you might not have known you had.

You Play a Large Role in Keeping the Public Safe

So there's really nothing to complain about. In fact, just by coming in for your emissions check and safety inspection shows that you're a responsible diver. It proves that you care about the people around you and your environment as well.

So the next time, don't grumble about the fast-approaching state inspection due date. Just remember that your test and inspection actually contributes to public health and safety.
