Have A Child In Travel Sports? Set Your Budget And Get An RV To Save Money

by Vicky Mills

If your child plays travel sports and you are considering getting an RV for the away events, this could end up saving you a lot of money in the long run. There are a lot of things you want to consider before you buy an RV, and to help you set a budget.

You have to determine how much you are really going to use it, what it's going to cost to own and operate, and where you will store it. Add the following expenses together.

Purchase Price

If you're trying to avoid hotel costs, and you want an RV so you can camp at sporting events and cook your own meals, you want to keep the purchase price low. The cost is going to vary, but you should expect to pay a few thousand dollars at least. The newer and larger it is, the more expensive it will be.

The average cost of a hotel room is $137.00 a night, and often that doesn't include two standard beds. If you are saving yourself $1,500 a year in hotel costs, and another few hundred dollars for food, the camper should pay for itself within a few years.

Storage

After you purchase the unit you have to store it if you don't have the property or the facility to do so. This could be as low as $20.00 per month at some locations, but could be more than that if you want an indoor option. Add this to your monthly expenses, or your annual cost for the RV.

Insurance

Call your insurance company for auto coverage and ask them what it will cost to insure the vehicle during your child's sport season, and what it will cost to have storage insurance on it. Take this number and add it to your equation, so you can see if the RV is going to be affordable.

An RV that you pull behind a truck or SUV is going to be more affordable than one that you drive. Go to a local RV dealer like Orangewood RV Center and see what you can get within your budget, to see if you want to consider camping instead of renting hotels every time your child has a tournament or an away game. Instead of throwing money away every weekend that you stay in a hotel, you'll be purchasing something that has value and that you can resell again in the future, while your saving money on hotel costs.
