3 Ways To Tell That Your Transmission Is Failing

by Vicky Mills

The transmission plays a critical role in the functioning of your car. This is why it is vital that every car owner know who to detect problems with the transmission. Here are a couple things you need to know about caring for your car and signs that the transmission is going out.

1. There Is Fluid Leaking From The Car

One obvious sign that there is a problem with the transmission is when there is fluid leaking from the bottom of the car. If the fluid is black, it means that it is motor oil and you have a problem with the engine. If the problem is with the transmission the fluid will be red or pink. The fluid will probably leak most while you are driving, however, it could leak a bit while you are in park.

Without enough fluid in the transmission it will cause the transmission to fail. This is why you should continue to put more transmission fluid in, until you can get the problem fixed. Always carry fluid with you and top off the gasket often.

2. There Is A Grinding Noise When You Shift

Another sign that there is a problem is if you notice a grinding sound when you shift gears. A healthy transmission should essentially be silent. You shouldn't hear any noises as it goes from one gear to the next. As the problem progresses further it will get louder and louder. In the beginning the noise may be a gentle sounds as you shift, but eventually it will start to grind on each other and the noise will get louder and louder. This is a sign that your transmission is near the end of its life.

3. The Car Is Slow To Respond When You Shift Gears

Lastly, you should be looking at how fast your transmission responds when you shift gears. For example, if there is any kind of delay when you go from one gear to the next, you have a problem.

If you can't tell if the gears are slow to respond try putting the car in neutral and then move back and forth between reverse, neutral and drive. If you notice that there is a second or two delay, it means that the transmission is close to dropping and nears replacement or repairs.

By looking for these signs you can catch the problem early on and hopefully avoid an expense repair to your car. For more information, visit shops like Destroyer Automotive.
