Help! Why Is The Brake Warning Light On?

by Vicky Mills

You're driving home after a long day at work and the brake warning light suddenly comes on. Is this one of those lights that means you should stop driving immediately? What does it mean for your car and your wallet? Here's a look at the main reasons for a brake warning light to show on the dash.

The Brake Fluid Is Low

One of the main reasons for the brake warning light is that the fluid is low. This could be due to use or a leak, but is a major problem and you should call into a mechanic immediately. Without the fluid, the brakes won't work properly and you run the risk of a serious accident.

You may be able to feel this problem when you put your foot on the pedal. Do you have to press it a few times to get the brakes to work? This is a problem you may also be able to see by collection of fluid on the ground or on the car parts.

The Brake Pads Are Worn

Another common reason for the light is when the brake pads are worn down. This will mean metal grinds on metal and causes damage to other parts of the system. By continuing to drive, you are putting your car at further risk of the brakes failing. You will usually hear your brake pads being the problem through a squeaking or grinding sound.

The Speed Sensor Is Faulty

The problem may be with the speed sensor in your car, rather than your brakes. This is the device outside the car wheel, which sends information to the ABS control module. Rather than the brake light coming on, the ABS light may show. This is your anti-locking braking system and prevents brakes from locking when you push on them in an emergency, helping to eliminate skidding.

The sensor may just need a quick cleaning. In other cases, it may need replacing to send the right information to the vehicle.

Your Emergency Brake Is On

If you are lucky, you do not really have a problem at all. You just made the mistake of leaving the emergency brake on. If you turn the emergency brake off, the light should go off with it. Keep in mind, driving your vehicle with the emergency brake on is awful for the vehicle. The emergency brake being on means you are telling your vehicle to stop. Continuing to drive the vehicle means you are also telling your vehicle to go. The confusion will cause the components of your vehicle to struggle to accommodate the fact that you want to stop and go at the same time. This, in turn, results in unnecessary stress on your vehicle.

Take care of your vehicle, especially when it comes to your brakes. When you see that light show on the dash, get it checked out immediately. It could mean the difference between life and death in an accident. Contact a business that offers auto services for more information.
