4 Tips For Saving Money On A Transmission Replacement

by Vicky Mills

Learning that your vehicle needs a new transmission is something that most auto owners do not want to hear, since replacing a transmission is one of the more expensive auto repairs. Luckily, there are several things you can do to reduce the cost of your transmission replacement. Use the following tips to save some money on auto parts:

Look for an Aftermarket Part

The original transmission that comes with a vehicle is referred to as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) part, meaning that it was made by the manufacturer of the vehicle. OEM parts tend to be expensive, especially OEM transmissions. Consider buying an aftermarket transmission when you need to replace your current transmission. An aftermarket transmission is brand new, but it is made by a company other than the auto manufacturer. In some cases, such as when a model year is known for having a faulty transmission, an aftermarket transmission may be a better choice.

Buy Used

Buying a used transmission can save you a lot of money on the replacement-- just make sure that you purchase a used transmission that is in excellent condition and has relatively low miles. You can typically find used transmissions for sale online, and you may also want to ask your mechanic if he or she knows where to buy a quality used transmission. You may also have luck visiting a local junk yard and purchasing a transmission from one of the vehicles in the lot.

Have Your Transmission Rebuilt

Before you assume that you have to purchase a new transmission, inquire about whether or not your transmission can be rebuilt. When a transmission is rebuilt, it is completely disassembled and damaged or worn out parts are replaced. During the reassembly process, new clutches, bands, gaskets, and seals are used. Depending on the make and model of your car, rebuilding the transmission may be less expensive than replacing it entirely.

Get Several Quotes

Transmissions are quite expensive auto parts, and transmission replacement can take a lot of time which results in a high labor cost. Before you commit to having an auto shop replace your transmission, get several quotes from other shops in your area. Spending the time to do this can save you a substantial amount of money since some places charge more for shop hours than others. When you get quotes, make sure that they include all taxes and fees--the last thing you want is to get a bill that is more than you expected when your pick up your car.
