Brake Screeching: What Does It Mean?

by Vicky Mills

Lately, you have noticed that when you step on your brakes, you hear a screeching sound. Is this normal or should you be worried? What does this mean? As a general rule, you should never ignore any unusual sound in your car, including screeching brakes. Below are possible reasons for your screeching brakes:

Dew and Frost

A screeching sound after starting your car in the morning is probably due to dew and frost. This is normal and should not get you worried. However, if it persists after a long drive, or throughout the day, then it is probably something more serious.

Worn Brake Pads

Worn brake pads are the most common cause of screeching brakes. Brake pads are normally made of metal covered with fiber lining.

When the fiber lining, also called the wear indicator is worn, the metal part gets into contact with the rotor, causing the screeching sound. This is a sound of alarm, meaning that you need to replace your brake pads as soon as possible.

Loose Front Brake Pads

When the front brake pads are loose, they also produce a screeching sound. Have them examined and fastened properly.

Poor Quality Brake Lining

If your brakes are screeching and you've recently had the brake pads replaced, the problem could be the quality of your brake lining. The only option here is to replace them with better ones. Always buy good quality brake pads.

Rusty Rotor

Rusty rotors will cause your brakes to screech. They may need grinding.

Worn Anti-rattle Clip

The clip that holds the brake pads in place may also be broken, causing the screeching sound.

Word of Caution

Your car's braking system is made up of interrelated parts. One faulty part will trigger a chain reaction that will damage other parts. Driving with worn brake pads will eventually cause your rotors to be warped.

This will drive up the cost of brake repair in the long run. It can also be dangerous as warped rotors will increase stopping time and may result in brake failure. If your brakes are screeching, do not wait to have them fixed.

Brakes are a vital part of your car and should always be in the best state of repair. Brake repair is heavy duty work that involves going into the bowels of your car. It is also a sensitive and technical job. Unless you are very handy and knowledgeable about cars, you are advised to leave it to professionals.
