3 Tips To Help Stop The Spread Of Auto Glass Damage

by Vicky Mills

Even a very small stone has the ability to take a chunk out of your car's windshield if this stone becomes airborne. Thankfully, small stone chips in your auto glass are relatively easy and affordable to repair. Unfortunately, a small chip in your glass can easily become a long crack if this damage is allowed to spread while you are awaiting a stone chip repair. The good news is that you can help to stop this type of spreading damage with the help of the three tips below.

Tip #1: Apply Clear Tape To Both Sides Of The Damage

A chip in your auto glass can have a rather significant impact on the overall strength of this glass. Consequently, you will need to reinforce the damaged area if you wish to prevent the damage from spreading until you can get the chip repaired. One easy way in which you can do this is to use clear, heavy-duty tape on both sides of the damaged glass. This tape should cover the damaged area completely and extend at least a few inches beyond the damaged area. This tip should only be used if the chip is located out of your sight line since even transparent glass can interfere with your ability to see clearly through your windshield.

Tip #2: Avoid Fast Changes In The Temperature Of Your Auto Glass

Fast or dramatic changes in the temperature of your auto glass can cause damage to your glass to spread quickly. In order to avoid this issue, it is best to park your vehicle out of the sun whenever possible. You will also want to avoid using your vehicle's defrost settings when trying to remove snow and ice from your auto glass. Instead, consider using a de-icing product or simply waiting for the heat of your warming car to naturally defrost the glass.

Tip #3: Avoid Driving At High Speeds Or In Extreme Weather Conditions

Driving with damaged auto glass can promote the spread of the damage. This is especially true when traveling at high speeds or in extreme weather conditions since this will put additional stress on your auto glass. If you are not able to avoid high speeds when driving, you will want to refrain from using your vehicle until the damage has been repaired. The use of mobile auto glass repair services can help to make this more convenient and limit the amount of time your vehicle is off the road.
