4 Common Transmission Problems You May Experience

by Vicky Mills

Your vehicle's transmission is an essential component that helps the engine provide power to the wheels. However, this part can break down over time, which will cause a potential problem that you will start to notice. That's why it helps to know what vehicle problems are related to the transmission so that you can have the part repaired.

Gear Slipping

Gear slipping is a common problem that happens when transmissions start to wear down. This is when the car should shift to the next gear on its own when you start driving faster, but the transmission hesitates to shift up or shifts downwards. This is often caused by not having enough transmission fluid in the system or by a worn-out solenoid that is not working properly.

A mechanic will investigate the problem by checking the transmission fluid levels. If the fluid is low, all it may involve to fix the problem is topping off the fluid. Return to the mechanic if the problem persists because it may be an issue that is hard to diagnose.

Fluid Leaks

Have you looked under your vehicle and noticed a transmission fluid leak? It is often dark red in color, unless it is dirty and is going to be much darker. Fluid leaks can often happen due to a damaged seal, worn down gasket, or even a bolt that has become loose. A mechanic will need to replace any faulty components of the transmission to prevent the fluid from leaking out, which will help prevent other problems as well.

Odd Noises

Do you hear an odd grinding or whining noise coming from your transmission? This is a serious problem that you'll want to look into since it is often caused by one of several parts that is malfunctioning. It could be bearings that are worn down, a lack of transmission fluid, or damaged gears that need to be replaced. You definitely do not want to delay having your car inspected when the transmission is making an odd noise because it could be causing more damage as you continue to drive your vehicle.

Stuck Clutch

A clutch that is stuck can cause problems with the transmission shifting gears. It could be something as simple as the clutch disc being worn out, or the clutch master cylinder could be damaged and need to be replaced. A mechanic will check the problem by inspecting the master cylinder and clutch cable for potential damage. If there is damage, they'll replace those parts and see if that fixes the problem with the stuck clutch.
